Dr. Niki Davis

Niki Davis, MD is a “rocket scientist” turned physician. She is board certified in both family medicine and lifestyle medicine. At age 13, she started removing animal products from her diet because she didn’t feel it was healthy. Once in college, she obtained bachelor and master degrees in mechanical engineering and worked on the space shuttle program for several years. However, instead of rockets on her mind, she was constantly thinking about health and nutrition – helping her own family members improve their health and their lives by switching to a plant based lifestyle.

She eventually found her way back to her passion after leaving her engineering career to apply for medical school. She graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 2017 and completed a Family Medicine residency program in 2020. While in residency, in addition to serving as Wellness Chief, she helped form Plant Based Montana, an advocacy group with the mission to educate healthcare providers and the general public about the benefits of a plant based diet.

She has had the pleasure of speaking at plant based events around the country and has been lucky enough to train with phenomenal mentors such as Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Michael Klaper, Dr. Anthony Lim, and Dr. Alan Goldhamer, among others. She is a regular guest on Chef AJ’s YouTube channel show and on the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) Podcast. She has a certificate in plant based nutrition from the T. Justina Froese

Justina Froese is a health and wellness counselor. She lives with her husband in Cologne, Germany. Her health journey led her to the psychologist Dr. Doug Lisle. She is trained and certified by his approach to motivation and well-being called Esteem Dynamics.

Coming from an obese and sick family background, she was interested in health from a young age. Her mother even gave her the title “Health Apostle.” But eating healthy and being slender isn’t as easy as many say. Personality places a huge role in how diligent someone follows a healthy diet. Bodyweight is 70% heritable, and therefore a lot of people have difficulties reaching a healthy weight on a Standard Western Diet.

As a former chronic dieter, she is familiar with this. Dieting and bingeing were part of her life for 15 years. The cycle of restriction, over-exercising, and bingeing was continued by a misguided caloric deprivation, and as a result, she consistently gained weight.

She started to see results in weight loss when she adopted a whole food plant-based diet, combined with the principles of calorie density.

It was a long health journey, but now she feels better than ever. She eats more than ever, exercises less, and is binge-free for years. Her passion is to help people to become binge-free forever and living a healthy lifestyle.

She also wrote the chapter about using a plant-based diet to treat diabetes in Vegetarian and Plant-Based Diets in Health and Disease Prevention (Academic Press, 2017).

Her favorite research topics include testing the effect a plant-based diet has on metabolism, insulin function, fitness, and mental health, as well as studying the impact meal timing and meal frequency have on metabolism and body weight.

Dr. Kahleova earned her doctorate in nutrition and diabetes and her medical degree from Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. As a postdoctoral research fellow at Loma Linda University in California, Dr. Kahleova analyzed data from 50,000 Adventist Health Study-2 participants. She analyzed data on meal frequency and timing in relationship to changes in body weight. She finds two to three meals a day, without snacks, are optimal for body weight control. This led to her recommendation to eat breakfast regularly and to make it the largest meal of the day.

How an African tribe busted the weight loss industry's biggest myth

Dr. Herman Pontzer

Herman Pontzer, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology and Research Associate Professor of Global Health at Duke University, investigates how our species’ evolutionary past shapes our lives today. His team conducted the first measurements of daily energy expenditure in traditional hunter-gatherers and in non-human apes, with findings that have challenged the way we think about diet, exercise, metabolism, and health. Dr. Pontzer’s new book, Burn: New Research Blows the Lid Off How We Really Burn Calories, Lose Weight, and Stay Healthy, published in March, 2021.

We burn 2,000 calories a day. And if we exercise and cut carbs, we’ll lose more weight. Right? Wrong. In this paradigm-shifting book, Herman Pontzer reveals for the first time how human metabolism really works so that we can finally manage our weight and improve our health.

Pontzer’s groundbreaking studies with hunter-gatherer tribes show how exercise doesn’t increase our metabolism. Instead, we burn calories within a very narrow range: nearly 3,000 calories per day, no matter our activity level. This was a brilliant evolutionary strategy to survive in times of famine. Now it seems to doom us to obesity. The good news is we can lose weight, but we need to cut calories. Refuting such weight-loss hype as paleo, keto, anti-gluten, anti-grain, and even vegan, Pontzer discusses how all diets succeed or fail: For shedding pounds, a calorie is a calorie.

At the same time, we must exercise to keep our body systems and signals functioning optimally, even if it won’t make us thinner. Hunter-gatherers like the Hadza move about five hours a day and remain remarkably healthy into old age. But elite athletes can push the body too far, burning calories faster than their bodies can take them in. It may be that the most spectacular athletic feats are the result not just of great training, but of an astonishingly efficient digestive system.

Revealing, irreverent, and always entertaining, Pontzer has written a book that will change how you eat, move, and live.

Herman Pontzer
Associate Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology and Global Health

How did the human body evolve, and how does our species’ deep past shape our health and physiology today? Through lab and field research, Dr. Pontzer investigates the physiology of humans and other primates to understand how ecology, lifestyle, diet, and evolutionary history affect metabolism and health. He is particularly interested in cardiometabolic disease and the lifestyle factors that protect against obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other noncommunicable diseases that are common among industrialized populations but rare or absent in non-industrialized societies.

Dr. Pontzer’s field projects seek to understand how diet, activity and other ecological factors influence the physiology and health of people in small-scale societies, including hunter-gatherers and subsistence farmers in east Africa and South America. Back at Duke, his lab research focuses on energetics and metabolism, including respirometry and doubly labeled water methods.

Why this is so urgent

weightlosscomplications_2-circle

Obesity is linked to 13 different types of cancer

In 2017 health officials reported that there is a link between obesity and 40 percent of all the cancers diagnosed in the United States. The 13 cancers include brain, breast, thyroid, stomach, liver, pancreas, kidney, ovaries, uterus and colon cancers the researchers said. (during the summit you'll learn exactly how to lose weight AND protect your health at the same time!)

weightlosscomplications_5-circle

Type 2 diabetes

Obesity is believed to account for 80-85% of the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Obese people are up to 80 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those with a BMI of less than 22. (the good news is that your body starts healing the moment you start losing weight the right way)

weightlosscomplications_4-circle

Heart disease

Heart disease is the number one killer in the US and multiple large-scale studies have shown that "Obesity is among the leading causes of elevated cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and morbidity." (did you know that the fat tissue itself releases inflammatory molecules that can induce cardiac dysfunction and promote plaque?)

weightlosscomplications_1-circle

Risk of stroke

Studies have shown that for each one-unit increase in BMI there is a 4% increase in the risk of ischemic stroke and a 6% increase for hemorrhagic stroke. That means just 20 pounds overweight increase the risk of stroke by 24%.

weightlosscomplications_3-circle

Depression and Dementia

People who were obese had a 55 percent greater risk of developing depression throughout their lives. But that's just the start: We now know that the brain is significantly impacted by the inflammatory state of obesity. As a consequence overweight is now recognized as a factor in dementia and cognitive function. (that's why losing weight is so vital - not just to feel great today, but to give yourself a chance to feel great in your golden years)

weightlosscomplications_6-circle

Processed food

60% of calories consumed in America come from highly processed foods. And only 5% of Americans get enough fiber. Fiber not only helps to manage a healthy weight, fiber is linked to reduced risks of developing various conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and constipation. (did you know that fiber helps with healthy cholesterol level, regular bowel movements and detox as well?)

weightlosscomplications_7-circle

Stress

42 percent of people report being \"stress eaters.\" This is not a sign of weakness but a natural consequence of our biology because 94% experience stress at work and processed foods are designed to artificially trigger our reward centers. (there are strategies to overcome cravings and emotional eating and you'll learn them from the foremost experts on the summit).

Weight loss is NOT a vanity goal. Excess body fat has devastating effects on our health and lives. That's why we're teaming up with 40 experts to bring you the truth about weight loss - FOR FREE.
